It’s time for the Sunday Night Check-in and I’m thankful you are spending a few minutes with me. Thanks for your kindness in last week’s responses. I am grateful for your compassion. Welcome to five new subscribers - feel free to say howdy in the comments! There are thunderstorms passing overhead as I write tonight. Apparently we are set to receive a lot of rain over the next several hours.
MEMORIAL DAY
Although we fill this weekend with many different kinds of activities, the emphasis remains remembering those who went off to war and did not come home. My prayer today has been for those who are missing their loved ones to experience comfort. I pray for those who generate wars without concern for lives lost to be moved to cease those wars. I pray for peace for our world. Although Memorial Day is reserved for those who perished in wartime, it is hard not to reflect on current conflicts.
PHIL ROBERTSON
A local icon has passed from this life to the next. I first heard the name Phil Robertson from my brother (an avid hunter and fisherman). Gary owned several of Phil’s hunting and fishing VHS videos. Phil Robertson has been an iconic figure for many years. I did not know Phil on a personal level, I only met him once. One Sunday I went over to University Church of Christ, where Phil was preaching and teaching each week. I enjoyed getting to meet him in person. Across the river in West Monroe at Whites Ferry Road Church, Phil served as an elder for many years. Of course, with the advent of Duck Dynasty television show, many new people began to become acquainted with the Robertsons. The past year (at least) has been difficult for Phil due to his health. He has been on our prayer list as well as his beloved wife Kay. Our love and prayers go out to the Robertson family in this time of sorrow and also a time of faith.
POLL
In last week’s poll about summer vacations, 58% of you were opting for shorter trips, and 27% have the big road trip planned. This week I wonder how you are observing Memorial Day?
FORSYTHE
This morning at Forsythe we continued our series through the Foundations of Our Fellowship. This week we were focused on One Lord. Sermon notes and audio are available HERE. Wednesday we continue our study of the book of Daniel. We had several folks visiting today and several out of town.
LISTENING
The Harmony Chorus from Bangalore, India is a multi-generational award winning chorus based in a school of music. I love this song! Amazing talent!
READING
I am close to being through with The Cassandra Trap by Ted Galdi. I’ve read some of Galdi’s other books and always enjoyed them. The keeps the action moving and often unpredictable. This particular mystery/thriller utilizes concepts of AI, something that is on our minds a lot these days. I have a few more chapters to go, but I can recommend it as a fun read. Maggy has now finished three of Walt Larimore’s Bryson books (Bryson City Tales, Bryson City Seasons, and Bryson City Secrets). She enjoyed all of them. I am on the second one. These are highly recommended and from a Christian perspective. Our Bible reading group is in 2 Samuel this week.
THE HOLY LENS
On The Holy Lens this week we have posts from

I do not have any new photographs to share. With the travels to the Mississippi Delta early in the week and my mom’s surgery late in the week, there wasn’t much time to get out and take pictures. Tomorrow doesn’t look promising either! It will happen sometime soon, I’m sure. From the archives, here are some photos of the tufted titmouse. I think these little birds are beautiful!

OTHER STACKS
Some of my favorite Substack Newsletters. Share some of yours in the comments! (This list is no where near complete!)
Thanks for spending a few minutes with me tonight. The night owl has done his work. Night owls and early birders all welcome here. Take care, friends. Work hard, rest well, and stay connected. The world needs you.
I did not know about Phil. How sad for his family. I can only imagine what kind of party is happening up there on his arrival!
What sad news about Phil. I wasn't familiar with his preaching, I just knew him from the couple of episodes of DD that I might have watched.
Lovely pictures.
Happy Memorial Day!
