When I first started taking pictures of the moon, someone warned me that there was a kind of unbreakable habit associated with that. The moon is visible most of each month and one could take innumerable pictures of it. I have taken many since my first foray into lunar photography. Whenever I look into the night sky and see the moon brightly in its place, I want to take just one more.
Moonlight drowns out all but the brightest stars. - J. R. R. Tolkien
It’s not about taking the best moon photographs of anyone, I don’t have that kind of equipment. There is just something pretty amazing about standing on my back patio and being able to capture the kind of detail unavailable to the naked eye. As always, I take about 50 pictures and one or two come out pretty good. Below are a few that weren’t quite as good as my favorite from tonight (the one up top!).
People who pay attention to such things say that we are about to experience a rare event - a second full moon in the month of August. It is being called a Blue Moon and will be visible on August 30th. On that night the moon will be the biggest and brightest appearance of the moon this year. There will be another full moon at the end of September.
To tell the truth, as interesting as all of that is, my mind begins to wander when I start reading about the details. What really intrigues me is the brightness of the moon and how it must be closer than I imagined for me to be able to capture images with such detail with my Canon SX70hs.
While we’re at it, I’ll share a few more images of the moon I’ve taken over the past couple of years. (The cost doesn’t go up folks, it’s a real bargain!)
Whoever it was that told me that there’s a new habit that comes along with taking pictures of the moon was right. I think I’ll take just one more.

The Next Full Moon is a Supermoon and a Blue Moon
I love seeing the moon and wish i had a camera powerful enough to photograph it. This was deeply satisfying to me. Space was my first love. Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful photos as always. 😊
