This week has been a scorcher. Although, what does one expect in Louisiana in August? I keep thinking that it’s hotter than ever (and we have set a few records), but I have a few other theories. One, my memory of hot days is not very accurate and by the time we go through Fall, Winter (2 days worth in Louisiana), and Spring, the really hot days seem distant. Another theory is that I get older each year (duh) and maybe my heat tolerance shrinks a little each year. The other theory is that the ocean is warmer, the glaciers are melting, and there’s going to be hell on earth because you used hairspray, sucked Coke through a plastic straw, and ate beef. No, I do not want to have a discussion on climate change, it’s too hot for me to get interested.
The air conditioner is not even getting a break during the night. It is running continually. I am so grateful to Willis Carrier for inventing that (my Google works just fine thank you). So, I have no right to complain. I probably will when my Entergy bill arrives. Still, I’m willing to pay!
It’s been hot long enough for the ground to feel hot. My grass is crispy. The animals are doing their best to cool off. I’ve made sure to keep the bird baths filled and fresh. The squirrels are doing their cool off by stretching out on branches or even on my concrete rabbit. The birds are taking baths in the bird bath and drinking the water (did anyone tell them not to do this?). I’ve also seen them taking ‘dust baths’ and spreading out on the ground in what I can only guess is an action toward cooling.
The weather is just everyone’s favorite mundane topic for discussion. When you walk into a store and you can barely breathe, dripping sweat, and pulling at your shirt, what else are you going to say? “Man, it’s hot.” Even strangers nearby will join you in that observation. And in that moment humanity is united. It’s hot for all of us. Somehow acknowledging that makes it a little better. It’s not just me. It’s all of us.
Do you remember back in June when we hit 87 and thought we were going to bake? I tried to remember that at some point this year we were going to WISH for a day like that! It will return. Until then, stay cool and hydrated. Try to remember the cooler days coming.
It doesn’t always snow during winter in Ouachita Parish Louisiana. I took this photo a couple of years ago of Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal in the snow on my patio. I wonder if they were saying to each other, “I don’t like this snow. I hope Summer is coming soon!”
Anyway, no big news here. Looking forward to worship with the Forsythe Church Family (FACOC) in the morning. I have a message I hope will encourage and offer hope. The basis of the sermon is a subject I know very little about - running. Even the runners I know think it’s too hot to run. But running is an interesting Bible metaphor and we’ll talk about that tomorrow. If you’re in town, we’d love to meet you. If not, anyone interested can read it tomorrow on the Forsythe Sermons Substack.
The birds make me smile! God bless you and enjoy the Sabbath Day tomorrow!
I'm not a believer in the scare tactic of climate control. Gods in control.we haven't measure many weather things for long. And I believe weather goes in cycles.
And YES...as we grow older weather does affect us MORE! I LOVED SUMMER and the heat when I was younger. No more. It takes.my breath away, zaps my strength and energy.
I THANK GOD.for the invention.of A/C.. And heat since we no longer have wood stove.
I.alao love the squirrel and cardenals!!.Some of our favorite!
Thank you!
