It’s the Sunday night check-in. I’d like to welcome the new subscribers and invite you to say howdy in the comments. It’s Father’s Day and though that’s a mixed bag of feelings for me, I hope all the dads who are putting in the effort had a great one.
Sunday at Forsythe Church of Christ we continued our summer series, Journey with Jesus: The Daily Trek of Discipleship. We talked about Growing in the Holy Spirit as an essential part of the walk with Jesus. Next week we will talk about the willingness of disciples to be servants. We had a good number of visitors and some who have been out with illness able to be back with us.
My most recent trip to Black Bayou was enjoyable, although I almost stepped on an alligator. No worries, though, he saw me coming and jumped into the water! Not a big one, but I wouldn’t have liked to have gotten any closer!
Watching
This past week we watched Under the Bridge on Hulu. A friend of mine who watched it described the series as “disturbing,” and I agree. Based on the true story of the murder of a teenager, I can’t say I recommend it. It was engrossing yet difficult to watch. There were several elements of the show that were unhappy for me. On a happier note, ALONE finally debuted this week and that was a great start to the series. I would comment but do not want to offer up any spoilers.
Reading
I finished reading John R. W. Stott’s The Radical Disciple: Some Neglected Aspects of Our Calling. I’ve never read anything by Stott that I thought was less than excellent. I have not started Glass Houses, the next Chief Inspector Gamache novel. For one thing, I’m using this break to imagine that things in Three Pines are going along in a harmonious way and there hasn’t been a body discovered in the past couple of weeks. But it won’t be long until I break down and read this thirteenth entry in the series.
The Bible is full of Christ. As he himself said, the Scriptures ‘testify about me’ (John 5:39). Jerome, the early Church Father, wrote that ‘ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ’. Equally, we may say that knowledge of Scripture is knowledge of Christ. - John R. W. Stott, The Radical Disciple
Listening
This morning we sang the old hymn In The Garden. I enjoyed that and it fit in with our message today. I’m listening to Selah singing their wonderful version of this song.
Some more photos from Black Bayou early last week.
