It’s hard to believe much of what you hear these days. If it’s the news, you wonder which political party they are supporting in what they choose to report/ignore. If it’s on Social Media you have no idea if anything you see is true or just an exaggeration
“The problem with internet quotes is that you cannot always depend on their accuracy.” - Abraham Lincoln
It is kind of exhausting having to keep your attention focused so you don’t get scammed, lied to, or led into some kind of scheme.
Is there anything we can believe anymore? I’m sure there are many things, but one thing I’m certain about is a promise made in Romans 9:
…If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; … for “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:9, 13)
There are three things I noticed about these verses.
1 - To be saved, we need to confess Jesus as Lord.
The word “Lord” has become one of those throwaway words that we use without thinking. But in reality, it defines our spiritual focus in life. “Jesus is Lord” means that I have submitted or yielded my life to Him. His will matters more than my will. When I confess Jesus as Lord, I am making it known that my commitment is to the will of God expressed in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
2 - To be saved I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead.
The resurrection of Jesus was the ultimate proof that he was the Son of God, as he said. There are many witnesses to the resurrection and we have the Gospel accounts to inform us about this amazing event. I do not just believe Jesus was a good man, a teacher, or even a revolutionary - I believe that he is risen from the dead. That’s what Easter is all about. This acknowledges that Jesus is alive right now - that I have made him my Lord.
3 - To be saved I call on the name of the Lord.
To call upon someone’s name is to appeal to their authority. No one else can save me. There are many influential people in our lives, but not one human being has the ability to save us from our sins. Only Jesus can do that - and we call upon Him to do so as we confess and believe in Him. When Ananias went to see Saul of Tarsus, he said to him: Rise up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name. - Acts 22:16
When it seems like we live in a world where there is so little to believe in, we can believe in Jesus. Confess him as Lord, believe that God raised him from the dead, and call upon the name of the Lord in life and in baptism. That is some truth we can believe in.
