Percy Quin State Park is located in South Mississippi near McComb. There are cabins to rent and camping spaces as well. Growing up in New Orleans and traveling to Vicksburg to see family, we passed by Percy Quin often. I was in McComb this week to speak at the McComb Church of Christ, where my longtime friend, Jeff Frank, is the preacher. As I write this I am embarrassed that we did not get a picture of the four of us (Maggy, Shari, Jeff, and me). How could I not have thought of that?
Jeff grew up at the McComb church, which makes his being the minister there an unusual situation. I told the church Wednesday night that Jeff brings a lot of happiness with others. He’s doing a great job there with a very nice church. I enjoyed being there. My lesson was on The Mission of Mercy. That church has some family history for Maggy. Her parents once owned the Sonic franchise in McComb, and she and her brother worked there, along with their mom and dad. While they lived there her brother, Dicky, fell in love with Jan Berch and they married and lived there for many years. Dicky passed away a few years ago and we miss him so much. On the way home from our trip we stopped at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, where many of the Berch family can be located.
While we were in McComb we took a drive out to Percy Quin park. We didn’t have a lot of time, but we were rewarded by some interesting characters.
This fellow was probably friendly enough, but he didn’t want to stick around and see how friendly we were. He made a hasty exit!
This youngster didn’t run away. Maybe he was too young to understand humans are not always friendly! I could hear his mother in the tree really chattering, but like most kids, he paid no attention!
There were also turtles and alligators - and I always enjoy taking their pictures! The alligator in the pictures below was pretty small. Notice the dragonfly I caught whirring over his head in one of the pictures!
I don’t want to leave out this one, I was interested in the squirrel playing on the bank nearby. Evidently, it was not his day to be lunch for the gator!
I’m glad we had a few hours of sunny weather - otherwise, we had some pretty intense storms, as did my friends in Louisiana back home. Visiting South Mississippi was enjoyable, but mostly because of good friends, enjoyable fellowship, and connections with delightful people.
And just for the fun of it, I think a picture of a cow is a peaceful way to bring this to a close!
