This afternoon I ventured out to Black Bayou National Wildlife Reserve. It’s one of my favorite places to go for peace and serenity, and to act like I know what I’m doing taking photographs! It was a bit on the chilly side, but sunny and pleasant enough. A few visits ago my granddaughter Claire spotted a beautiful owl. I’ve been revisiting that spot hoping to photograph this lovely creature, but I haven’t seen it again. Today, however, a Cooper’s Hawk was perched close to the same location. He allowed me to take a few pictures before flying off into the woods.
At the end of that road I noticed what must be some sign of beaver activity. If it’s something else, tell me! This tree is going to be in the water soon!
After that, I drove down the road past the observation deck to the photo blind. The grassy growth in the water outside the photo blind has pretty much blocked any visuals to speak of. But I did wander down a path near where I parked. Off the trail, I noticed how low the water was and was able to walk where normally I would not be able to. On the way back, I heard a hiss and looked down quickly. There, a few feet away, was a cottonmouth snake. I had to have nearly stepped on it when I passed earlier. Now, however, it made its presence known and I gave it a wide berth. I think I’m going to invest in some snake chaps.
I was a bit shaky after that and decided to go on the boardwalk over Black Bayou Lake - a favorite walk. There were so many ducks swimming on the water. I saw three small alligators and a turtle. For such a chilly day I did not expect to see so many reptiles!
This red-bellied woodpecker did not enjoy my observing and snapping pictures! I think they are so beautiful. I didn’t realize that he was at ‘home’ here in this tree until he settled in and decided that it was ok for him to watch me! I’m glad he didn’t pull out a camera and start taking pictures!
The sun was starting to set and the temps went from chilly to cold, so I began my journey back to the car. I was able to capture a furry friend and a feathered friend as the evening shadows gathered.
On my way home from Black Bayou NWR, I considered that I had much for which to be thankful. The heat in my car works well. I didn’t step on that snake! I was able to breathe in so much beauty and smile and chat with others who were there for the same. And I’m thankful that you joined me on this afternoon respite. I’m in a period of time when I have a few days off before the new year begins. I appreciate the breather and seek God’s refreshing Spirit to energize me for the coming year. Spending time in the natural world that God created blesses me. I hope sharing some of the images with you blesses you as well.
Maybe you look out your window and see that the leaves on your tree have turned fire red. the sight takes your breath away. Stop and be thankful that the God of amazing grace created that tree and your ability to see, understand, and enjoy it. He chose you to experience its pleasure at that moment because he is the God of tender, patient grace. - Paul David Tripp, New Morning Mercies.
Thanks for sharing your afternoon and these wonderful photos. I especially love the woodpecker shots--such a pretty bird! I’m also
surprised by all the reptiles--especially that snake! Good reminder that they’re still moving, even in this weather, and to stay on my toes.
Enjoy this down time. Yesterday I realized that I will have six whole days of practically nothing on the calendar--I’m giddy with excitement thinking of all the reading I can get in.
Not cool about the snake!
