But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. ~Hebrews 3:13
There is a surplus of discouragement, disappointment, despondency and defeat in our world today. How can we be bright lights of encouragement in a stormy and dangerous world? We look for ways to activate encouragement in our interactions with others!
LISTEN! James 1:19 encourages us to “be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” Someone said, “Friends are those rare people who ask how we are then wait to hear the answer.”
EMPATHIZE! Romans 12:15 tells Christians to “Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.” Try to put yourself in the other person's shoes to get their perspective. Sometimes our own experiences will help us to be empathetic.
PRAY! Paul told the Corinthians, “And you are helping us by praying for us” (2 Corinthians 1:11).
SPEAK AND SMILE! Proverbs 16:24 says, “Kind words are like honey—sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Harvey Mackay said, “People all over the world smile in the same language.” Amen!
WRITE! A note saying, “I care” or “I’m praying” will mean much to someone who is lonely, grieving, or discouraged.
HELP! If you can see a way to help someone, you should try to do so! In Matthew 25:35-36 Jesus indicates that when we serve hurting people we are serving him. Helpers use ordinary skills to encourage others.
Another emphasis in Hebrews 3:13 is the word “daily.” This tells us that as long as we have opportunity to encourage others, we should make the effort. I’ve been in the valley many times. God sent friends to fill me with hope and encourage me. Let’s provide that for others.
Good words John!
Such a good reminder! We all need encouragement and I appreciate the encouragement you provide with your writing! You are able to express your thoughts so well! Thank you!
